San Antonio Fear Free Environment (SAFFE) officers assigned to specific streets or neighborhoods have been highly successful in building relationships and increasing safety. I would advocate for expanding this program to include an additional SAFFE officer for weekend duty. Some neighborhoods, however, experience more serious, organized, or gang-related crime. As a former prosecutor, I’ve worked with all levels of law enforcement and will ensure that neighborhood concerns are heard and addressed.

Pedestrian deaths and injuries are unacceptably high. Sidewalks and crosswalks are essential for safer walking conditions. Residents know where they are needed, and data shows where accidents occur. I will listen to both residents and the data, prioritizing pedestrian safety projects accordingly.

My dog was dumped in my neighborhood. Before he came to live with me, he stayed, scared but loyal, under a tree near his leash for weeks waiting for his person to return. While dumping is never a solution, I understand that some people, facing difficult circumstances, may not want to surrender their pets to ACS, fearing almost certain euthanasia. San Antonio has made progress in addressing the stray and loose dog crisis, but more needs to be done. Current measures must be evaluated for their effectiveness. I support enforcing the “one-strike” spay/neuter ordinance, as well as measures that help residents repair fences and stay in their pet-friendly homes.

Beyond making biking safer, well-designed bike lanes enhance neighborhoods and business districts by creating a vibrant atmosphere and reducing the need for parking. San Antonio’s latest bike plan is ambitious and a great step forward, but it needs to be implemented. I will push for rapid implementation, focusing first on the most dangerous areas for cyclists. I will also provide oversight to ensure that new bike lanes are designed and executed properly.
